Discover Roccella Ionica

Where it is located

In the heart of the old town, the small square of the “Borgo” pulses with life, representing the soul of one of the oldest districts in the city.

Here, visitors can immerse themselves in local traditions, sipping a refreshing coffee-flavoured soda or Bergamella, a typical bergamot soda from Reggio Calabria, which symbolises the taste and tradition of the region.

What to visit

The Mother Church, with its three naves, is the main religious building and houses priceless artifacts, such as a Renaissance crucifix and a series of representations of the Stations of the Cross. Other significant structures include the 17th-century Church of St. Joseph and the 18th-century Church of St. Anastasia, each rich in history and art. The region has undergone dramatic geological transformations that have shaped a landscape of restless beauty.

Between the seafront and Piazza S. Vittorio stand two gigantic monolithic columns made of Egyptian porphyry, nearly 7 metres tall and weighing about 12 tons. These columns, known as the Melissari Columns, were discovered in 1868 in perfect condition and were likely intended for the construction of a pagan temple, although no further traces of the temple have been found.

Dominating the town from its scenic hilltop, the medieval castle in Roccella Ionica is a symbol of strength and resilience. This ancient fortress, a witness to different eras and battles, withstood the attacks of the Turkish pirate Dragut Pasha in the mid-16th century, remaining an essential monument for anyone visiting the region. From its summit, it offers a breathtaking view of the sea and the inland, combining the beauty of nature with the grandeur of history.
