Discover Gerace
Immerse yourself in history
Perched on a hill approximately 500 metres above sea level, Gerace is a charming medieval village that overlooks the Calabrian Ionian coast. Known as “the city of a hundred churches,” Gerace captivates with its cobblestone streets, stone buildings, and breathtaking panoramic views.
Its name derives from the Greek word “Hierax,” meaning sparrowhawk, referencing the legend that a hawk led the inhabitants of Locri to this safe haven during the Saracen invasions.

What to see in Gerace
The heart of Gerace is represented by the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the largest church in Calabria, a sublime example of Norman architecture. Equally captivating is the Church of San Francesco d’Assisi, with its precious Baroque altar.
While strolling through the historic centre, visitors can admire the ancient city gates, such as Porta del Sole and Porta dei Vescovi, as well as the striking “bombarde,” narrow passages carved into the rock. The Norman Castle, though in ruins, offers an unrivalled panoramic view of the valley and the sea.
A story to Discover
Founded in the 7th-8th century AD by the inhabitants of Locri fleeing from coastal raids, Gerace has preserved its medieval structure. During the Norman period, the town reached its peak, becoming an important religious and commercial centre. The numerous churches and monasteries bear witness to the spiritual significance of the village, while the fortifications and walls tell of a past marked by battles and dominations. Today, Gerace is recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, a guardian of ancient traditions and an invaluable historic and artistic heritage.
