Caulonia is a place where the past blends harmoniously with the present. Strolling through its medieval historic centre, one can admire ancient alleys, welcoming squares, and majestic noble palaces, such as the Asciutti-Hyeraci Palace, famous for its high-relief decorations.
Among the religious monuments, the Church of the Holy Rosary and the Mother Church stand out, with their trullo-style domes and the 16th-century mausoleum. Also noteworthy are the evocative ruins of the Carafa Castle, which tell stories of a distant past. Along the coastline, Caulonia Marina offers golden beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for relaxation and scuba diving, while the Camillari Tower and the Hermitage of Saint Ilarion bear witness to the rich history of the area.
A story to discover
Caulonia has deep roots that stretch back to antiquity. According to legend, it was founded by the survivors of the Greek city of Kaulon, destroyed by Dionysius of Syracuse. Over the centuries, the village has preserved its medieval structure.
During the Renaissance, Caulonia experienced a period of prosperity under the rule of the Carafa family. Throughout the centuries, the village witnessed significant historic events, such as the birth of the Red Republic of Caulonia in 1945, a brief yet intense period of peasant revolt against the powerful landowners. Today, Caulonia continues to tell its story through its monuments, traditions, and festivals, offering visitors an experience that merges the beauty of the past with the vibrancy of the present.
